About Pratah Sandhya

Pratah Sandhya is the sacred morning twilight period that connects the end of the night with the rising of the Sun. In Vedic scripture, this auspicious transition—known as the morning Sandhya—is hailed as one of the three primary daily conjunctions (Tri-Sandhya) for spiritual renewal.

  • Dawn twilight
  • 1.5 muhurtas before sunrise, ending at sunrise
  • About 72 minutes (3 ghatis)
  • Sandhyavandanam, Gayatri japa, Surya arghya

Traditionally beginning approximately 3 Ghatis (1.5 Muhurtas or about 72 minutes) before sunrise, Pratah Sandhya is the prescribed time for performing Sandhyavandanam, invoking the sacred Gayatri Mantra, offering Surya Arghya (water libation), and practicing pranayama. The subtle dawn atmosphere enhances concentration and dissolves mental fatigue.

Traditional Significance

Pratah Sandhya is the first of the three daily junctions (Tri-Sandhya). The dharma texts advise beginning the morning Sandhyavandanam while the stars are still visible and completing it with an offering of water to the Sun at sunrise.

Timings are calculated precisely from the local sunrise and preceding night duration for your selected location. Performing spiritual observances before the sun's disc appears on the horizon is considered especially meritorious in Vedic tradition.

Times are worked out for the place you have chosen (India until you choose one). For the whole day at your place, open the daily panchang.
