About Brahma Muhurat

Brahma Muhurat (literally 'the hour of Brahma') is a sacred period occurring 2 Muhurtas before sunrise, ending one Muhurta before the sun appears. In Vedic literature and Ayurvedic science (Ashtanga Hridaya), this pre-dawn window is hailed as the ultimate time for health, wisdom, and spiritual awakening.

  • Pre-dawn
  • 14th of the 15 night muhurtas
  • About 48 minutes (one muhurta)
  • Meditation, yoga and study

During this period, the atmosphere is saturated with pure sattvic vibrations, tranquility, and vital prana. It is traditionally prescribed as the best time for waking, meditation, prayer, japa, yoga, and self-reflection, when mental clarity and cognitive retention are at their zenith.

Traditional Significance

The Ayurvedic text Ashtanga Hridaya advises rising during Brahma Muhurat to protect health and long life. In yoga tradition the mind is at its calmest at this hour, which is why it is prescribed for meditation, pranayama, prayer and study.

Timings vary with local sunrise. In classical Vedic calculation, the night between sunset and the following sunrise is divided into 15 equal Muhurtas, with Brahma Muhurat being the 14th Muhurat.
