About Nishita Muhurta

Nishita Muhurta (also referred to as Nishitha Kaal) is the 8th Muhurta of the night, centered directly at astronomical midnight (Madhyaratri). When the night interval between sunset and the following sunrise is divided into 15 equal parts, the central 8th division constitutes Nishita Muhurta.

  • Midnight
  • 8th of the 15 night muhurtas
  • About 48 minutes (one muhurta)
  • Shiva puja, Shivaratri, Janmashtami

While mundane secular activities and journeys are traditionally paused at midnight, Nishita Muhurta is revered in the scriptures as extraordinarily sacred for spiritual awakening, Tantra, Dhyana, and invocations of Lord Shiva, Goddess Kali, and Lord Krishna (who was born at Nishitha Kaal on Janmashtami). Mahashivratri Lingodbhava puja is performed specifically during this window.

Traditional Significance

The Lingodbhava puja of Maha Shivaratri and Lord Krishna's birth on Janmashtami both fall in Nishita Kaal. It is avoided for worldly work but held to be the best time for mantra japa, deep meditation and night worship.

Timings vary according to your location's sunset and the following sunrise. Because night length changes throughout the year, the duration of Nishita Muhurta typically ranges from 44 to 52 minutes.

Times are worked out for the place you have chosen (India until you choose one). For the whole day at your place, open the daily panchang.
