About Godhuli Muhurta

Godhuli Muhurta (literally 'the hour of cow-dust') is a sanctified evening period in Vedic tradition occurring immediately around sunset. Historically, this was when cows returned home from grazing, raising fine dust that was considered purifying and auspicious.

  • Sunset
  • First half muhurta of the night
  • About 24 minutes
  • Weddings, evening lamp and puja

Classical astrological texts revere Godhuli Muhurta as a powerful window capable of neutralizing several planetary doshas and malefic planetary influences. It is considered highly favorable for evening prayer, temple worship, Lakshmi puja, lighting the evening lamp, and initiating auspicious deeds when no other primary daytime Muhurta is available.

Traditional Significance

Godhuli means 'cow dust': the dust raised by cattle returning home at sunset. Muhurta texts treat this time as free of many doshas, so weddings and other ceremonies are held in it when no other muhurat can be found.

It lasts about half a night muhurta (around 24 minutes), starting at local sunset. The exact time depends on your location's latitude, longitude and sunset.

Times are worked out for the place you have chosen (India until you choose one). For the whole day at your place, open the daily panchang.
