About Amrit Kalam

Amrit Kalam (or Amrita Kaal) is a highly esteemed auspicious interval derived directly from the duration and characteristics of the prevailing Nakshatra (lunar constellation). In Vedic astrology, Nakshatras contain specific potent segments, with Amrit Kalam embodying the life-giving nectar of planetary energy.

  • Changes daily
  • Set by the day's nakshatra
  • About 96 minutes (4 ghatis)
  • Auspicious work and new beginnings

Lasting for 4 Ghatis (approximately 1 hour and 36 minutes), Amrit Kalam counteracts minor astrological flaws and provides a strong foundation for important undertakings. It is traditionally favored for starting new businesses, signing contracts, travel, medical treatments, ceremonies, and housewarming rites.

Traditional Significance

'Amrit' means the nectar of immortality. Each of the 27 nakshatras has a set 4-ghati Amrit window within it, so the time moves from day to day and some days have none. It is preferred for ceremonies, agreements, medical treatment and journeys.

The start time of Amrit Kalam depends on the specific Nakshatra and its exact span between its start and end moments. When a Nakshatra changes during the day, the Amrit Kalam of that day reflects the corresponding astronomical proportion.
