About Jain Pachchakkhaan Calculation

Pachchakkhaan refers to a formal renunciation or undertaking in Jain practice.

The daytime from sunrise to sunset is divided into four Prahars. Each Prahar is one quarter of the local daylight duration.

The nighttime from sunset to the following sunrise is divided into four Prahars. Day and night Prahars therefore change according to the selected location and date.

Navkarshi is 48 minutes after sunrise. Porshi begins at the second Day Prahar, Sadha Porshi occurs one and a half Day Prahars after sunrise, Purimaddha begins at the third Day Prahar, and Avaddha begins at the fourth Day Prahar.

Chovihar is 48 minutes before sunset. Evening Pratikraman begins at sunset, Santhara Porshi begins at the second Night Prahar, Nishita begins at the third Night Prahar, and Morning Pratikraman begins at the fourth Night Prahar.

Traditional Jain observance can differ between sects, gacchas, sanghs and local panchangs. For religious observance, follow the guidance of your Jain tradition or religious teacher.
