Times Avoided for Marriage

A Hindu wedding is fixed for an auspicious muhurta, and as much attention goes to what must be avoided as to what is sought. Some whole seasons are closed to weddings, and within the open seasons certain days, yogas and hours are rejected.

Seasons closed to weddings

Weddings are not held in Chaturmasa, the four months from Devshayani to Prabodhini Ekadashi when Vishnu sleeps; in Kharmas, the months when the Sun is in Dhanu or Meena; in Adhik Maas, the leap month; in Pitru Paksha; in the eight days of Holashtak before Holi; or while Jupiter or Venus is combust (asta), too close to the Sun to be seen, since they are the significators of marriage. Some regions also avoid the month of Shravana or the year when Jupiter is in Simha.

Days and yogas rejected

Within the open seasons, astrologers reject the Rikta tithis (Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi), Amavasya, days of eclipses and the days around them, and the Bhadra (Vishti karana). Of the 27 panchang yogas, Vyatipata and Vaidhriti are avoided entirely, and the first half of Parigha, among others. Combinations such as Jwalamukhi, Dagdha and Mrityu yogas are rejected. The nakshatras favoured for marriage are Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati.

Personal factors

The final muhurta also depends on the couple: the Moon sign of each, the strength of the Moon and Jupiter for them that day (Chandrabala and Gurubala), and a lagna free of affliction at the moment of the wedding. The vivah muhurat pages give the dates that are open each year.
