Kaldarshak Panchang

Kaldarshak is a name that many Hindi panchangs carry. The word means a "viewer of time", and the booklets under it are the small yearly almanacs sold in north India at the turn of the year, at a price within reach of every family. Several Delhi publishers issue a Kaldarshak of their own, so the name tells the reader the kind of book, not one single publisher.

Why more than one book has the name

Among the editions listed for sale are the Shri Brajraj Kaldarshak Panchang, issued by a Delhi publisher, Sri Rajdhani Prakashan, and the Maa Annapurna Kaldarshak Panchang, issued by another Delhi house. Each is a separate book with its own editors. Two Kaldarshak almanacs can therefore differ in the details of a tithi time or a muhurta, in the same way as any two printed panchangs, and a family should keep to the one it has always used.

What the booklet holds

A north Indian panchang of this kind follows the Purnimanta month, in which the dark half of a month belongs to the month that ends on the full moon, and the Vikram Samvat year, which begins on the day after the Chaitra new moon in the north. For every day it gives the tithi, the nakshatra, the yoga and the karana with their ending times, the sunrise and sunset, the Rahu Kala and the day of the week. A table of the fasts and festivals of the year, the lists of marriage and griha pravesha muhurtas, the dates of the Sankrantis and the eclipses, and the yearly forecast by rashi complete the book.

The times are calculated for a central city, which is Delhi for these books, and the printed times can differ by several minutes in another city. A reader far from the city for which the panchang was made should treat the sunrise-based times as approximate.

Checking a date

To see the tithi of a day and the time at which it begins and ends for your own city, open the panchang of the day on this site. When a festival is kept on one day in the printed almanac and on another here, look at the tithi times: the dates part only when a tithi is short or ends close to sunrise, and the almanac of the tradition you follow is the one to keep for the ceremony.
