Govardhan Puja Vidhi

On the day after Diwali, Kartika Shukla Pratipada, Govardhan Puja recalls Krishna lifting the Govardhan hill on his finger to shelter the people of Vraja from Indra's storm. A small hill is made in the courtyard and worshipped, and a mountain of food, the Annakut, is offered.

The hill

In the morning, shape a small hill of cow dung in the courtyard or on a board, decorated with flowers, grass and twigs as trees, and figures of Krishna, cows, cowherds and calves. Some make it in the shape of a reclining figure. In flats, a hill of food or a picture of Govardhan is used.

The puja

Bathe, wear clean clothes and purify yourself and the place. Make the sankalpa for the puja and worship Ganesha first. Worship the hill with water, roli, rice, flowers, milk, curd, sweets and a lamp placed at its navel. Walk around it seven times with water poured in a line and barley scattered, singing Govardhan songs.

Cows and bullocks are bathed, decorated with colours and garlands and fed, and worshipped as Krishna did.

Annakut

Prepare as many dishes as you can, traditionally 56 (chhappan bhog), or a mixed vegetable dish, kadhi, rice, puris and sweets, heap them before Krishna as a mountain of food, and offer them. After the aarti the prasad is shared with family, neighbours and visitors. Temples hold great Annakut feasts.

The story

The people of Vraja used to worship Indra for rain. Krishna persuaded them to worship Govardhan hill, which fed their cows, instead. Indra, angered, sent a storm for seven days, and Krishna lifted the hill on his little finger as an umbrella for everyone. Indra admitted his pride, and the first Annakut was offered to the hill.
