Significance & Spiritual Meaning

pausha-putrada-ekadashi is observed with dedicated fasting and deep meditation on Bhagavan Sri Hari Vishnu on the eleventh lunar tithi. Ekadashi is regarded in the Padma Purana, Bhavishya Purana, and Shrimad Bhagavatam as the foremost among all spiritual vows (Vrata-Raja). Observing this holy day with devotion cleanses both body and soul. Devotees abstain completely from all grains, cereals, beans, and heavy foods, dedicating the day to sacred japa, reading spiritual scriptures, and singing devotional hymns. The fast culminates on the following Dwadashi morning with the auspicious Parana ritual.

Spiritual philosophy, inner meaning and eternal virtues

Astronomically and spiritually, the eleventh tithi aligns the body's digestive and bio-energetic rhythms with the lunar gravity cycle. Fasting on Ekadashi detoxifies internal organs, enhances mental clarity, calms turbulent emotions, and awakens pure devotion (Bhakti). According to ancient sages, observing Ekadashi with a sincere heart grants the spiritual merits of visiting all holy pilgrimage sites (Tirthas) and paves the royal road to Vaikuntha (the eternal abode of peace).

## Sacred Story & Divine Lore

Scriptural history and divine legends in sacred lore

Core Narrative Summary

“In the Padma Purana, Lord Krishna tells King Yudhishthira that a radiant divine feminine power manifested from Lord Vishnu's body to vanquish the demon Mura. Pleased by her devotion, Vishnu named her Ekadashi and proclaimed that whoever observes this sacred vow with devotion will receive freedom from all sins and enter Vaikuntha.”

In the Padma Purana, King Yudhishthira inquires from Lord Shri Krishna about the origin and glory of Ekadashi. Lord Krishna explains that during the Satya Yuga, when the demon Mura terrorized the three worlds, a radiant female energy manifested from the slumbering Lord Vishnu's body and annihilated the demon. Pleased by her valor and pure devotion, Lord Vishnu named her 'Ekadashi' and granted her the boon that whoever observes a fast on her appearance day will be freed from all past sins and receive eternal liberation.
