## Sacred Story & Divine Lore

Scriptural history and divine legends in sacred lore

Core Narrative Summary

“When the deadly Halahala poison threatened to destroy all creation during Samudra Manthan, Lord Shiva consumed it out of boundless compassion, holding it in His throat. On this sacred night, Shiva and Parvati united in celestial marriage.”

The Shiva Purana narrates two momentous cosmic occurrences on Maha Shivaratri. First, during the cosmic Samudra Manthan, before the nectar of immortality (Amrita) could emerge, a lethal, burning poison named Halahala surfaced, threatening to incinerate the three worlds. Desperate, the Devas and Asuras prayed to Lord Shiva for salvation. Out of boundless compassion (Karuna), Lord Shiva gathered the venom in His palm and drank it. Goddess Parvati placed Her hand upon His throat to prevent the poison from entering His stomach. The venom remained in His throat, turning it dark blue and earning Him the eternal title 'Neelakantha'. To soothe the scorching heat, the gods and sages performed night-long abhishekam with cool Ganga water and Bilva leaves, singing His praises until dawn. Secondly, on this holy night, Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati in the presence of all celestial beings, representing the ultimate harmonious union of Purusha (the Supreme Unmanifest Witness) and Prakriti (the Manifest Universe).
